Another new bike product is the folding bike by Birdy, USA. These are based on a design by Reiss and Mueller of Germany and rather than having a joint on the top tube, these bikes hinge at the front and rear forks so that the wheels fold under the frame. A little more complicated to fold, these bikes have a full suspension and 18” wheels and the ride can only be compared to a full-size touring bike, it’s incredibly smooth. These bikes come in 8, 9, and 14 speed versions and consequently, can be used in almost any capacity a full size bike can offer you. Jeff saw the first of these suspended folders in Japan and has since obtained a Bianchi-branded version of this bike, the only one of its kind in the states right now. Its a celeste green beauty and he tested it on the streets of Rome and the steep hills of Positano on our most recent trip to Italy.
